NO EXTENSIONS CAN BE GRANTED BY ANYBODY BUT THE DIRECTOR OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES IN ENGLISH.Students will also write in a variety of non-fiction modes–explainers, profiles, essays, memoirs.Students are expected to keep a writer’s notebook where they transcribe and reflect on their experiences and questions about travel around the Atlantic Rim.
A guided tour of the museum by the curator will be included.
Next we will go to the James Joyce Center at North Great George's Street, where we can rent audio tour materials and go on a two-hour walking tour of all the sites of (which we shall have just read). We will spend the afternoon writing at the National Museum of Ireland, paying particular attention to the bodies preserved in peat bogs as a topic of a short story.
The goal of the course is to expose new writers to a variety of types of writing while getting their creative juices flowing.
At the end of the quarter, students will feel more confident about their skills and will be prepared for further study of writing.
Reading The best writers are also the most voracious readers.
Read widely, randomly and in an interdisciplinary fashion.
In this class, students will explore various creative writing strategies, techniques, structures, materials, and the basic elements of craft for writing fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.
In addition to reading short stories, poems, nonfiction travel writing, and essays on craft, students will be expected to complete several substantive writing exercises so that they might take a practitioner’s approach to writing in these three genres.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module the student should be able to demonstrate a practical and critical knowledge of the construction of contemporary poetry and fiction in terms of language, genre, form, metrics, narrative, character, and description, and of representative examples of published writers.
Syllabus In Autumn the group will focus on poetry with Peter Blegvad and in Spring on prose with George Ttoouli.
