Summer is Over School is in Session Many students will sadly say goodbye to summer as they find themselves at the start of a new school year all over again. Some of their expectations include seeing friends that they haven't seen since school let out for the summer.
Before addressing this topic, however, sit down and reflect on your views and comfort levels as an educator.
Once you know what you will accept and reject, you can help the students to better understand those things, too.
Educators may require students to write in their planners, and offer a participation grade for the active use of one. Behavioral When I taught K- 12 grade students, I would begin the first week by setting expectations for our class together.
It was at this time that I could learn what was most important to my students, and give them a voice and ownership over our learning environment.
Regardless of what expectations are ultimately chosen and disseminated, remember to inspect what you expect.
An expectation does no good if it is never monitored, followed up upon, and/or explained.Growing up, I’ve heard adults say, “High school was the best four years of my life!” Because of that, I expected to have a blast when I entered freshman year. After 13 years of earsplitting alarm clocks, uncomfortable desks and chairs, repulsive cafeteria lunches, looming finals and exams, missing mechanical pencils and invigorating group projects – it’s time for graduation. After you walk across that stage in June, everything is going to change. You’ll be reminded of how you got here, what you learned, and what experiences were most meaningful to you. This can be a big part of those social butterflies that are excited to show off their over the summer selfies.Yet many other students that are less social may be experiencing some inertia about expecting the new year to be different than the last.Once students get acclimated at being back in school, their expectations may shift to trying to figure out their course work load, to trying to comprehend their teachers teaching style and how these relate to their own learning styles. Before you get caught up in the whirlwind of excitement and nervousness surrounding the big day, it’s good to take some time and reflect on the past four years of your life. A good reflection of high school ought to do you good. For example, educators have academic, behavioral, socio- emotional and sometimes, physical expectations of their students. For a student, the expectations can be markedly different.
